This listing is for an superb, highly detailed original preminary drawing in graphite on sketching paper for the book by Randall Jarrell called "The Gingerbread Rabbit". The scene was designated for page 37 and depicts the father rabbit grabbing his son (who is now made of gingerbread), and is dashing full speed to get away from a fox. The father rabbit has his pipe in his mouth and the young rabbit is literally being grabbed so firmly that his feet are not even touching the ground. Darkly penciled by Garth Williams allows to piece to showcase very well and would amazing framed.
Initialed by Garth Williams lower right corner. The sheet measures 8.5" x 11" with the art in excellent condition. Please note that the final sketches for this book title where rendered in ink by Williams and have sold at auction for prices ranging $2500 and up.

Provenance: The sheet was purchased with a group of preliminary sketches from Heritage Auctions Galleries, who in turn acquired these pieces direct from the estate of Garth Williams. Each piece is an original and sold directly from his estate. A copy of the invoice from Heritage Auctions will be included with each piece.
The art is in excellent condition and would be stunning framed.
**Garth Williams was a prominent illustrator of several of the most prominent children’s books including Stuart Little (1945), Charolette’s Web (1952), The Cricket In Times Square, and The Rescuers (1959). Many of his original illustrations from these book have sold attaining high premiums, including his original illustration of the dust jacket for Charolette’s Web which realized $155,000 at auction in 2010, and between $10,000 and $45,000 for original artwork of the interior pages. Other notable auction pricing of Williams original illustrations include sales of the original artwork for the interior pages of Stuart Little which also averaged in the $15,000 range per piece.
