THE CATCHER IN THE RYE

Little, Brown and Company, 1951. First Printing, First State. Hardcover.

Little, Brown and Company, Boston, 1951

First Edition, First Printing, First State Jacket: A lovely near fine copy of this title in the first printing, FIRST STATE dust jacket. Beautiful clean near fine book with a near fine FIRST STATE vibrant original dust jacket. With all relevant issue points, including original price (in the correct place on the flap, the dollar sign is above the shoulder of the letter “R” instead of being on the heel of the “R”), Salinger’s hair touching the upper edge of the rear panel, and  the “First Edition” statement on the copyright page.

The near fine book has black cloth with vibrant gilt titles to the spine withOUT the common fading to the titles. The book has sharp corners, and no edgewear. Very very faint tape ghosts are present which are hard to see and do not really even show in the images. The binding is tight and square. The end papers are clean and bright with the rear end paper having a bit of wavyness, Otherwise the end papers have no owner names, no inscriptions, no book plates and no bookstore stamps. The interior pages are clean, and unusually bright, with no marks, no stains, no handling marks, no bent pages and no writing, and the outer page block remains bright. An overall solid, beautiful, clean book. Please see images.

The original first edition, FIRST STATE jacket is the correct first issue with the cropping of Salinger’s head on the rear panel, with Salinger’s hair barely touching the upper edge and the correct placement of the price on the front flap. The jacket benefited from a touch of slight restoration by an expert paper conservator to the very outer spine tips, and one small 1/2" repair to a tear/chip to the lower rear panel. The jacket has strong vibrant colors with NONE of the typical fading to the red on the spine, but the lower portion of the spine is age toned. The jacket has no edgewear, no chips, no stains, no rubbing, no rips, no fading and no foxing. The dust jacket is NOT Price clipped and has a stated price of $3.00 on the inside front flap, and is the FIRST state with no space above Salinger’s head. Please see detailed images.

A fantastic well price first printing copy with a superb clean book and a vibrant first printing, first state dust jacket!
